Description
Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that can enter your home either through your foundation or carried into the home via your well water and subsequently released to the air through cooking, showering or laundry. The 48-Hour Radon-in-Air Test produces an initial snapshot of radon levels in the home over a short period of time. This test involves two vials placed in the basement of the home (or lowest level of the home where people spend time) to collect and measure radon gas over a period of 48 hours. The vials are then sent to a state-certified lab for analysis. Radon in air tests can fluctuate significantly due to barometric pressure or seasonality.
Health Implications
Radon exposure is known to cause cancer and is estimated to cause many thousands of deaths each year. Because you can’t see, taste or smell radon, testing is the only way to assess your risk of radon exposure. Ninety-five percent (95%) of exposure to radon is from indoor air; about one percent (1%) is from water – and this, typically released from running water activities, such as bathing, showering, and cleaning. Only 0.1% of exposure is from ingesting drinking water contaminated with radon. Knowing the Radon in Air concentrations in the living spaces of the homes is important to a healthy environment.
