Home / SafeWell Certified

The quality of our drinking water is directly linked to the quality of our lives. Our clean water initiative allows us to have an impact by ensuring safe water for ourselves, our families and our communities. SafeWell Certification restores trust and confidence that it’s safe to drink water from our wells.

The SafeWell Certified Seal is a mark of distinction verifying a private well water system is delivering the highest quality water above public drinking water standards. We created the SafeWell Certification process to provide assurance to homeowners with wells and prospective buyers of a property with a well that the water system is delivering healthy and safe drinking water. Certification is simply validation that a private well water system is operating as designed and delivering the highest quality drinking water for families.

The SafeWell Certification program is an initiative to promote the health and safety of private water systems through third-party verification. More than 1 in 4 private well water systems have at least one contaminant with health risks. The goal of our program is to dramatically reduce the number of residents in New England who are exposed to unhealthy drinking water and to reduce the negative impact on our communities.

Third-Party Verification
Each SafeWell Certified water system has been inspected and tested against industry, state, and US EPA Standards for construction, functionality, water quality and quantity output. Onsite inspections, detailed documentation, review and analysis are used during the certification process.

Water Quality Rating System
Our program uses a standardized rating system co-developed with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and requires a minimum level of water quality. Our goal is to simplify the science behind drinking water standards.

FAQs About Certification

What is SafeWell Certification?
SafeWell’s annual certification verifies your private water system meets or exceeds public drinking water standards.

What Does SafeWell Certified Mean?
SafeWell Certified is a mark of distinction providing well owners with the assurance that the well water system is delivering safe, clean water at or above the public drinking water standards.

Water is one of the essential building blocks of life, yet one in four wells in New England produce drinking water below the public drinking water standards. SafeWell Certification ensures a private water system is functioning at the highest level to deliver safe, healthy drinking water to a home.

Our certification process is simple and efficient. The certification process includes annual inspection of the entire water delivery system to measure effectiveness and functionality and comprehensive water testing to assess water quality and quantity.

Over time a water system degrades and water chemistry is always changing. An annual certification provides a complete assessment of a water system’s performance allowing a homeowner with a well to take action to maintain the highest quality drinking water.

What is Included in an Annual SafeWell Certification?

A SafeWell Certification is:

* A complete inspection of a private well water delivery system which includes: well, pump, pressure tank, treatment systems, and distribution components. The findings are scored and credits are awarded based on the integrity of construction, functionality, water quality, and quantity output of the system. The standardized rating system is defined by industry best practices and functional standards.

* The drinking water is tested against EPA standards and rated using a scale co-developed with MassDEP.

* The well quantity output is measured and compared against industry requirements, state guidelines, and rated accordingly. (optional)

The overall private water system score will earn one of four SafeWell Certification Levels: Platinum (126-141), Gold (106-125), Silver (86-105) Bronze (75-85) or No Rating (less than 75).

Well owners will have a chance to improve their rating  by taking corrective action to address any areas identified which reduce the ability of the water system to deliver the highest quality drinking water to the home.

Completing an annual SafeWell Certification ensures a private water system is functioning properly, delivering the highest quality drinking water at a quantity that is sufficient to meet household needs.

How Does It Work?
The SafeWell Certification Process is really simple. In order to avoid any confusion, certification of your well water system simply means that the water coming into the home is safe to drink. It's not an extra step in the water testing process. With some much confusion regarding water quality, we wanted to make it easy for homeowners with wells to have confidence in knowing their well water is safe to drink.

Learn More About Our Process

I Just Want to Get My Water Tested
There's more to knowing your water is safe to drink than simply testing the water. Onsite inspection of the water delivery system plays a big part in determining health risk factors. As part of our standard testing process, we offer a complimentary well inspection to assess the well water delivery system. The next step is water testing. The lab results will be entered into our Water Quality Rating Model which will calculate a score and tells us whether your system is able to be certified to deliver water quality above drinking water standards. The good news is that even if the score is below a 75 (failed), corrective action can be taken and certification awarded.  Corrective action could be as simple as replacing a well cap, disinfecting the well, or more involved such as installing a treatment system.
