Description
When the results from a comprehensive water quality test show that your well water is high in radon, a Radon Aeration System for the whole house may be recommended to reduce/eliminate the radon in your drinking water. Aeration is used for treating water with radon levels above 5,000 pCi/L. Radon is released from the water by bubbling air through the water and is then vented to the outdoors. As opposed to a filtration system, there is no buildup of radioactive materials when this technique is used. Aeration units do require repressurization of the water after it is treated and care must be taken to properly vent the radon gas. This venting is done above the roof line just like an air radon removal system. This service includes both the Radon Aeration System and the installation.
Why Remove Radon from Your Well Water?
Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that may be found in drinking water, as well as indoor air. Ninety-five percent (95%) of exposure to radon is from indoor air; about one percent (1%) is from water – and this, typically released from running water activities, such as bathing, showering, and cleaning. Only 0.1% of exposure is from ingesting drinking water contaminated with radon.
Long-term exposure to radon is known to increase the risk of cancer: stomach cancer from water and lung cancer from air. A general rule of thumb is that for every 10,000 pCi/L of radon in a home’s water supply, 1 pCi/L of radon is contributed to the home’s radon-in-air measurement. This is known as the “transfer ratio.”
Based on a National Academy of Science report, EPA estimates that radon in drinking water causes about 168 cancer deaths per year: 89% from lung cancer caused by breathing radon released to the indoor air from the water.
