Description
Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that can enter your home either through your foundation or carried into the home via your well water and subsequently released to the air through cooking, showering or laundry. Wells that have tested high for radon-in-water in the past may require additional monitoring. It is important to have several data points related to radon-in-water prior to determining the proper mitigation technology.
Health Implications
Radon exposure is known to cause cancer and is estimated to cause many thousands of deaths each year. Because you can’t see, taste or smell radon, testing is the only way to assess your risk of radon exposure. Ninety-five percent (95%) of exposure to radon is from indoor air; about one percent (1%) is from water – and this, typically released from running water activities, such as bathing, showering, and cleaning. Only 0.1% of exposure is from ingesting drinking water contaminated with radon. Knowing the concentrations of radon-in-water is important to making informed decisions regarding radon mitigation and maintaining a healthy home environment. Radon-in-Water levels can fluctuate significantly due to barometric pressure or seasonality.
