Description
When the results from a comprehensive water quality test show that your well water is hard (has high mineral content), an Ion Exchange Water Softener System may be recommended to remove unwanted minerals from your drinking water. Water softener systems are typically installed at point-of-entry, that is, a whole-house water treatment system. This service includes both the Water Softener System and the installation.
Why Soften Your Well Water?
While hard water does not generally pose a health hazard, hard water can be a nuisance and lead to costly repairs to water-using appliances and plumbing. For example, the scale deposited by hard water can:
- clog pipes and reduce water flow
- clog and shorten the life of water heaters
- decrease the efficiency of toilet flushing unit by 70% and water taps by 40%
- coat and spot the insides of tea/coffee pots
- increase utility bills, due to accumulated scale in the water heater (Scale is a poor conductor of heat, increasing the energy needed to heat water.)
A water softener removes the calcium and magnesium ions that make water hard by replacing them with salt (sodium or potassium) via ion exchange. Not only does this system remove the magnesium and calcium, it can also remove other minerals including iron and manganese which are prevalent in New England area wells and can cause rust or brown staining in plumbing fixtures like toilets and sinks.
