Description
A private well water system is made up of many components: the well cap, the casing, the pump, pressure tank, pressure gauge, sediment filters, treatment systems, etc. All of these components need to work in conjunction with one another to deliver the highest quality water the system can output. A complete well inspection entails:
- Evaluation of the distance to any sources of pollution or contamination on your property (e.g., septic tank)
- Landscape survey to make sure no objects or obstructions are within a 10-foot radius of the well
- Visual inspection of the well head
- Checking for any corrosion, leaks or cracks on plumbing and piping
- Inspection the water treatment system, checking for structural integrity, proper valve settings, correct treatment settings and evidence of maintenance
- Measurement of static water levels, where possible
- Measurement of water temperature
It’s important that a private well water system be inspected at least annually to validate everything is in optimal working order.
Health Implications
Often, homes are purchased with private wells and the home owner does not have complete knowledge and understanding of the operation of their private well water system. It is not unusual for homeowners to be living with treatment systems which have been bypassed or turned off, temporary well caps which allow bacteria in the well, or just a poorly functioning delivery system which can all lead to poor water quality.
